Tropical Broadleaf Trees

An impressive collection of 10 tropical tree species native to Southeast Asia, tropical Australia, Pacific islands, or Madagascar. Commonly planted throughout the tropics in streets, parks, and gardens. Laubwerk Plant Kit 27 includes the beach casuarina with soft wispy pine-like appearance, the attractive, fragrantly flowering large tembusu, and the stunning variegated Madagascar almond, a small- to medium-sized tree with a symmetrical crown arranged in layered tiers.

Laubwerk Plant Kit 27 – Tropical Broadleaf Trees

The following 10 tree species are included in the Plant Kit 27. Each species comes in 36 variations per species, i.e. 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasonal aspects, for a total of 360 models per Kit.

Javanese Cassia

Cassia javanica subsp. agnes

Medium to large deciduous tree with a spreading crown and picturesque shape. Thin drooping pendulous greyish branches. Big green paripinnate leaves, consisting of small oblong to ovate leaflets. Beautiful pink to whitish-pink flowers in raceme inflorescence. Big cylindrical blackish-brown seed pods, which turn black when ripen. Native to Indonesia, India, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Thailand, where it is an important food plant for butterflies.

Beach Casuarina

Casuarina equisetifolia

Large evergreen tree with a loose open crown, low canopy, and slim shape. Light-greyish-brown to blackish bark. Long, feather-like leaves, which consist of tiny, connected scales, reminiscent of pine needles, though belonging to a deciduous tree. Male flower is inconspicuous, while the dense female flower hangs in red tufts. Extremely hard wood, which is used in Australia for the production of railway sleepers, for example.

Tembusu

Cyrtophyllum fragrans

Medium to large slow-growing evergreen tree with conical crown. Dark-brown, deeply fissured bark. Thin leathery to elliptic, distinctly tipped, light-green leaves. Androgynous, fragrant, inflorescent cream-white flowers, turning yellow. Broadly ellipsoid or round green berries that turn orange or red when ripe. Pictured on the Singaporean five-dollar bill.

Ironwood

Hopea odorata

Medium to large evergreen tree with a large, conical crown and a very high canopy. Grey to dark-brown bark with a scaly, grooved surface. Alternating, usually ovate-lanceolate or sickle-shaped, deep-green leaves, with a wedge-shaped leaf base. Small fragrant yellowish-white flowers arranged in racemose inflorescences appear every two years in early to mid spring. Small, egg-shaped fruits with upright lanceolate and round wings. Is on the Red List of Endangered Species.

Lagerstroemia speciosa

Big shrub or small to medium-sized deciduous tree with a dense, broadly conical crown, later getting more rounded and pendulous. Smooth, creamy-brown to light grey bark, peeling in papery flakes. Ovate to oblong leaves, which are coloured glossy red and finally green, older leaves whitish to orange-red before being shed, leaves being shed in dry season. Pinkish-purple to fading white flowers in giant panicle inflorescences. Green to brown, woody, globose capsules. With its ornamental features it can be used as a solitary shrub in parks and gardens.

Monoon longifolium 'Pendula'

A small to medium-sized tree with evergreen foliage on weeping branches in a columnar crown. Greyish brown bark on a smooth straight trunk. Leaves are lanveolate with a wavy margin, smooth glossy surface and a long leaf tip. Emerging foliage in yellowish to light brown before maturing to dark green. Light-green star-shaped flowers appear in spring for a period of two to three weeks. After flowering, green fruits are borne in clusters which turn purple or black when ripe. Fruits and flowers are attractive to wildlife like caterpillars and birds.

Senna surattensis

Evergreen, large-sized shrub or small tree. Even-pinnate, green leaves with small, obovate to oblong leaflets, glabrous upper side and slightly pubescent bottom side. Beautiful yellow to golden flowers arranged in racemose inflorescences. Flat pods with glabrous surface. Young leaves can be used for cooking.

Evergreen, fast-growing shrub or mostly multi-stemmed small tree with an oval-shaped crown. Initially glabrous, smooth, greenish bark, becoming slightly crenate, rough and changes colour into light brown to reddish brown. Imparipinnate leaves with small oval, serrate leaflets. Fragrant, bell-shaped, golden yellow flowers with reddish veined throat, arranged in dense fascicle. Large, long capsule fruit from green to brown. State flower of the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands and important ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical regions.

Fast-growing, evergreen, small to medium-sized tree with picturesque, conspicuously layered branches. Smooth, mottled pale grey bark with brownish lenticels. Small, mottled grey-green leaves with spectacular creamy-white irregular border and glossy, smooth surface.

Xanthostemon chrysanthus

An evergreen, fast-growing, small to medium-sized tree with a dense crown and a rough-barked trunk, which is often twisted. Foliage consists of lance-shaped, dark green, leathery leaves, mostly clustered at the ends of branches. In summer and fall, bright yellow five-petaled flowers emerge. They are followed by green capsule fruits which turn brown when maturing. The tree is attractive to wildlife like birds, butterflies and bees. It's the floral emblem of Cairns, Australia.
