Subtropical Shrubs

A selection of both popular and attactive subtropical shrubs and bushes species planted in parks and gardens such as oleander and magnificent angel’s trumpet or bay laurel. Shrubs are not hardy but containers can be placed outdoors during the summer in temperate regions creating a Mediterranean feel.

Laubwerk Plant Kit 12 – Subtropical Shrubs

The following 10 shrubs species are included in the Plant Kit 12. Each species comes in 36 variations per species, i.e. 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasonal aspects, for a total of 360 models per Kit.

Hedgehog Agave

Agave stricta

Medium-sized evergreen perennial succulent with a symmetrical, highly sculptural form. Rosettes of rigid, flesh, narrow, dark green leaves with no teeth on margins but sharp spine tips. Funnel-shaped, small, dark purple to dark red flowers in summer, which lasts until late fall, borne in dense, erect racemes up to 2 m (7 ft) long. Perfect for xeriscapes in the landscape as well as making an attractive potted plant. Flower blooms are edible and cooked in specific dishes. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Magnificent Angel's Trumpet

Brugmansia × insignis

Evergreen shrub or small trees, stout-stemmed with gracefully spreading branches. Light brown bark. Large, broad though coarsely textured dark green leaves. Large, convex, trumpet-shaped, pale yellowish-pink flowers hang downwards and darken with age from summer to fall. Originally from the West Amazon, but has spread to other tropical and subtropical areas. In colder winters it usually will go semi-deciduous. All parts poisonous.

Common Red Bottle Brush

Callistemon citrinus

Medium-sized, evergreen shrub with a lax habit and slender arching branches. Light green or light gray, hard, fibrous or papery bark. Aromatic, linear to lance-shaped, rather stiff leaves. Showy flowers in dense, bright crimson 'bottlebrush' heads in which the long colourful stamens are prominent. Crushed leaves lemon scented, hence the (botanical) name. Flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds.

Dwarf Mountain Palm

Chamaedorea elegans

Small, compact, evergreen, understory palm with a compact shape and slender solitary or clustered, cane-like stems. Dense, attractive foliage with arching, green pinnate leaves, with 12 or more pairs of narrow leaflets per leaf. Tiny yellow flowers are borne in terminal panicles or spikes below the leaves. Attactive, small black fruit. Native to rainforests from southeastern Mexico to northern Guatemala. Often cultivated in temperate regions as a houseplant. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Tree Heath 'Estrella Gold'

Erica arborea 'Estrella Gold'

Small, slow-growing, evergreen shrub with a broad compact habit. Brown bark. Fine, needle-like leaves in whorls give a feathery look. Bright yellow young shoots in spring becoming lime-green in summer but retaining yellow tips. Small, honey-scented, white flowers in long panicles appear in spring. One of the most popular cultivars of tree heather originally from Portugal.

Bay Laurel

Laurus nobilis

Evergreen tree or large shrub with a large, erect habit. For garden purposes, it is often pruned. Smooth, gray bark. Leathery, aromatic, narrowly ovate, glossy dark green leaves. Small, pale greenish-yellow flowers. Oval berries on female plants glossy purple-black when ripe. The ancient Greeks and Romans crowned their heroes and their scholars with wreaths made of laurel branches.

Oleander

Nerium oleander

Evergreen shrub or small tree with an upright, rounded habit. Grayish bark. Narrow, willow-like, linear-lanceolate leaves with distinctive midribs, light green and very glossy when young, before maturing to a dull dark green-greenish gray. White, pink to red, five-petaled funnel-shaped flowers in clusters from summer to fall. Long, bean-like seed-pods. All parts of this plant are poisonous if ingested.

Rosemary

Salvia rosmarinus

Small, evergreen shrub with an erect, rounded habit. Gray, scaly bark. Gray-green, linear, needle-like leaves, closely spaced on the stems, intensely fragrant with a strong flavor. Tiny, two-lipped, pale blue to white flowers. In temperate climates the plant flowers in spring and summer. Flowers are attractive to bees.

Snowdrop Bush

Styrax officinalis

Medium-sized to large deciduous shrub or small tree with an erect habit and attractive branching. Gray bark. Smooth-edged, round to ovate leaves, alternately arranged. Foliage deep green above, grayish-white beneath, turning to yellow during fall. Creamy white, bell-shaped, and fragrant flowers in late spring. Fleshy, ball-like and green to yellow fruits mature in late summer. The flower resembles citrus blossoms, and even disseminates a pleasant scent of citrus fragrance. Wounded stems exude a fragrant resin known as styrax, an herbal medicine known from ancient times.

Mound Lily Yucca

Yucca gloriosa

Medium-sized evergreen shrub with an upright or erect form and a spiky architectural habit. Cluster of spine-tipped, stiff, glaucous-green leaves. Panicles of nodding, bell-shaped cream flowers in late summer. Initially the fruits are green, when ripe they are a brownish colour. The seeds are black and quite thickened. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
