Spherical, orange to red, slightly prickly fruits reminiscent of strawberries. Conspicuous, ornamental fruit also suitable for consumption and used for the production of jam and liqueur.

Has no visible, showy flower, but a flower-bearing organ (= syconium), which turn into a fig after pollination. Large, tasty, oblong or pear-shaped fruits, first green, later yellow or brown-violet. The plant can only be pollinated through the so-called fig wasp, which only can get through a tiny opening into the syconium.

Light green, long-ovate or round acorns. Characteristic tree of the Mediterranean climatic zone in which it plays a major role for the traditional pig fattening on the Iberian peninsula.

Without maintenance the dead brown leaves remain hanging on the palm trees – sometimes covering the entire trunk – which reminds of a skirt. That is the reason for the alternate name petticoat palm.
