Laubwerk Plant Kit 15 – Subtropical Trees and Palms

The following 10 tree species are included in the Plant Kit 15. Each species comes in 36 variations per species, i.e. 3 variants, 3 ages and 4 seasonal aspects, for a total of 360 models per Kit.

Strawberry Tree

Arbutus unedo

Evergreen, slow-growing, mostly multi-stemmed shrub or small tree with spreading, broad and round crown. Bark initially reddish-brown, increasingly pied grey when getting older, peels off regularly. Hard, mostly lancet-shaped leaves with a serrated margin in shiny middle green. Bell-shaped white to pink flowers in autumn and winter. Spherical, orange to red, slightly prickly fruits reminiscent of strawberries. Conspicuous, ornamental fruit also suitable for consumption and used for the production of jam and liqueur.

European Nettle Tree

Celtis australis

Medium to large, picturesquely growing deciduous tree with spreading, slightly irregular, broudly round to umbrella-shaped crown. Smooth, grey, beech-like trunk and woolly hairy greenish shoots. Alternately arranged, ovate to elliptical, strongly dentated leaves with dark green, rough top and grey-green, soft hairy underside. Flowers very small and rather inconspicuous. Spherical fruits from reddish, to later becoming purple-brown to violet-brown with sweetish, edible pulp. Important fauna tree for bees, butterflies and butterflies.

Mediterranean Dwarf Palm

Chamaerops humilis

Small, mostly multi-stemmed, slow growing palm with bushy shape and compact, dense crown. Trunk covered with brown fibers, similar to the hemp palm. Rigid, fan-shaped, semicircular leaves of pointed, lanceolate blue or grey-green plumage and spiny leaf stalks. Large, bright yellow flower spikes in spring. Globular to ovate, yellow to later reddish-brown berries. Originally from the coastal regions of the western Mediterranean.

Pink Snowball

Dombeya × cayeuxii

Fast growing, evergreen, medium sized shrub or multi-stem tree with round crown. Smooth bark only slightly grooved. Large, middle-green, dentate, alternate, petiolate leaves. From October to March round clusters of pink, sweet scented flowers, which look like the flowers of Hydrangea. The sweet scented flowers attract lots of bees and butterflies. Species is named after the hoticulturist Henri Cayeux who supposedly created this species.

Southern Blue Gum

Eucalyptus globulus

Very fast-growing, large, evergreen tree with a wide-spreading, bright crown. Multi-coloured bark, from white, off-white to yellow and grey, peeling off in strips, light green to light brown bark underneath. Variegated leaves, depending on the age of the tree, ovate to lanceolate and silvery to silvery-grey-blue in young age, crescent-shaped to lanceolate and bluish-green in age. White to off-white flowers in spring and summer. Obdeltoid, brown capsule fruit. Extracted oil from leaves is used for medical use in colds.

Common Fig

Ficus carica

Fast-growing, deciduous shrub or small tree with a broad, wide-spreading, strongly branched crown and a low canopy. Trunk mostly twisted, gnarled or curved with greyish-brown bark and clearly recognizable lenticels. Medium green, hand-shaped, three-to five-lobed leaves with a rough upper surface and slightly pubescent, softer underside. Has no visible, showy flower, but a flower-bearing organ (= syconium), which turn into a fig after pollination. Large, tasty, oblong or pear-shaped fruits, first green, later yellow or brown-violet. The plant can only be pollinated through the so-called fig wasp, which only can get through a tiny opening into the syconium.

Jacaranda

Jacaranda mimosifolia

Medium-sized, deciduous tree with spreading, broad and bright crown in round shape. Greyish brown, thin bark. Double pinnate leaves consisting of many narrow-elliptic, light to medium green leaflets. Showy, beautiful, bright blue-violet, bell-shaped flowers loosely connected in pyramidal panicles. Leathery, wooden, red-brown capsule fruit. Important ornamental wood in subtropical regions.

Southern Magnolia

Magnolia grandiflora

Evergreen, small to large tree with spreading, broad, conical crown, partly multi-stemmed. Hairy, tomentose bark at young twigs, older branches and trunk with bald, thin, grey bark. Leathery, large, reverse ovate or elliptic leaves with apex, upper lobes glossy dark green and smooth, underside red-brown and slightly pubescent. Large, showy, fragrant, white, cup-shaped flower. Brown, slightly haired, large common fruit. Is a very important and characteristic ornamental shrub in the southern states of the USA.

Evergreen Oak

Quercus ilex

Large, wintergreen, often multi-stemmed, slow-growing deciduous tree with spherical crown and picturesque shape. Smooth, dark grey bark, increasingly furrowed in old age. Alternately arranged, leathery, ovate to lanceolate, dentate leaves with dark green, glossy top and whitish to greyish, felty underside. Yellow catkins from spring to early summer. Light green, long-ovate or round acorns. Characteristic tree of the Mediterranean climatic zone in which it plays a major role for the traditional pig fattening on the Iberian peninsula.

Desert Fan Palm

Washingtonia filifera

Robust, fast-growing, large palm with a high canopy and a loose, open crown. Brown to reddish brown and grey, barrel-shaped trunk, increasingly cracked in old age. Huge, hanging, fan-shaped leaves, from yellowish-green, silver to grey-greenish, with drooping white fibers. White to yellow blossom. Dark brown to black fruits. Without maintenance the dead brown leaves remain hanging on the palm trees – sometimes covering the entire trunk – which reminds of a skirt. That is the reason for the alternate name petticoat palm.
