Temperate Ornamental Perennials

An impressive collection of ten temperate ornamental species and cultivars suited for sunny dry sites in gardens and parks, commonly planted in temperate regions around the world. These plants range from compact showy cultivars such as blue eryngo 'Blue Hobbit' and giant hyssop 'Blue Fortune' to commonly known species such as purple coneflower and includes the spectacular ballheaded onion Dutch garlic 'Purple Sensation'. This kit will add color, structure, unprecedented detail to your outdoor designs.

Laubwerk Plant Kit 18 – Temperate Ornamental Perennials

The following 10 temperate flowering ornamental species and cultivars are included in the Plant Kit 18. Each species or cultivar comes in 3 variations in one seasonal aspect (summer), for a total of 30 models per Kit. Note that Kit 18 is a pre-release, with currently only one season and therefore offered at a reduced price.

Giant Hyssop 'Blue Fortune'

Agastache 'Blue Fortune'

An upright herbaceous perennial forming a clump of leafy stems, with dense, interrupted spikes of small, 2-lipped tubular flowers. Blooms from midsummer to early fall. Flowers are very attractive to bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Simple, aromatic leaves with pleasant minty-anise fragrance. Beautiful silhouette in winter. Good cut flower. Dutch breed from an American and an Asian sweet nettle species, selected by Gert Fortgens in 1993.

Dutch Garlic 'Purple Sensation'

Allium hollandicum 'Purple Sensation'

A ballheaded onion forming spectacular balls of deep purple flowers at the end of spring to early summer. The spherical flower balls are composed of many filigree star flowers, growing between 10 and 12 cm in diameter. The sturdy tubular stalks grow up to 90 cm in height. When planted in small clusters, it creates a great effect for viewing at a distance. It also makes great cut flowers.

Wall Bellflower

Campanula portenschlagiana

A vigorous, low-growing, mound-forming herbaceous perennial quickly forming an evergreen mat of small, heart- or kidney-shaped leaves. Small bell-shaped violet-blue flowers are borne in profusion, completely covering the plant from mid- to late summer. Native to the Dalmatian Mountains in Croatia. The Latin specific epithet portenschlagiana commemorates the Austrian naturalist Franz von Portenschlag-Leydermayer (1772–1822).

Coneflower

Echinacea purpurea

An upright, clump-forming, rhizomatous herbaceous perennial with long-stalked solitary flower-heads. Large, showy daisy-like coneflowers with purplish pink petals and prominent brown central disk, which bloom throughout summer. Dead flower stems will upright well into winter. Coarsely hairy, ovate or lance-shaped, dark green leaves. Attractive to birds and butterflies. Good fresh cut or dried flower. The Latin specific epithet means purple.

Blue Eryngo 'Blue Hobbit'

Eryngium planum 'Blue Hobbit'

A compact, bushy, thorny herbaceous perennial with a rosette of dark green basal leaves. Stiff, branched, steel-blue stems bear deeply-lobed, silvery blue-green, spiny leaves. Spiny, purplish-blue, cone-like flower heads appear in a profuse and long summer bloom to early fall. Excellent fresh cut or dried flower. Cultivar name of Hobbit is in reference to fictional characters created by J. R. R. Tolkien.

Cranesbill 'Biokovo'

Geranium × cantabrigiense 'Biokovo'

A vigorous, semi-evergreen, mat-forming, hybrid perennial. Aromatic, rounded, lobed leaves. Long-persisting, very pale pink, sterile flowers with contrasting deep pink stamens that bloom from late spring into early/ mid-summer with a sporadic rebloom sometimes continuing to fall. Attractive to butterflies. The cultivar was a naturally occurring hybrid, which was discovered in the Biokova Mountains in Croatia.

Macedonian Scabious

Knautia macedonica

An upright, clump-forming herbaceous perennial. Pinnately-lobed, dark green basal leaves, and simple or lobed stem leaves with a succession of deep purplish-red, domed, pincushion-like flower heads, similar to those of its close relative scabious. Long early summer to early fall bloom period. Somewhat short-lived perennial, which self-seeds readily. Good fresh cut or dried flower. Latin specific epithet is in reference to Macedonia on the Balkan Peninsula.

English Lavender 'Blue Scent'

Lavandula angustifolia 'Blue Scent'

A bushy but compact variety of the flowering subshrub species. Narrow, scented grey to green leaves and slim, upright, square stems. Dense, blue flowers in the summer. Both foliage and flowers are highly aromatic. Leaves are evergreen in warm winter climates. Attractive to butterflies. While native to the Mediterranean it was reportedly named English lavender because of its ability to grow well in the English climate.

Drumstick Flower

Pycnosorus globosus

Erect, clumping, tufted, herbaceous perennial. Silvery colored grass-like leaves, which are arranged in the form of rosettes. From these rosettes rise the wiry, unbranched, tall flower stalks producing distinctive, cherry tomato sized primrose yellow globes. Blooms from late spring or early summer to late summer. Attractive to bees and butterflies. Excellent fresh cut or dried flower.

Russian Sage 'Blue Spire'

Salvia yangii 'Blue Spire'

An open upright small deciduous subshrub with white stems bearing deeply-divided, aromatic greyish leaves. Abundant, small blue-violet flowers in large plumy panicles in late summer and autumn. The subshrub originally occurs in steppe areas and dry forests in Afghanistan, the Himalayas and Tibet. The species came to Europe in 1904 and was first named after the Russian general and governor Vasilij Perovskij (1794-1857).
