Temperate Ornamental Perennials

An impressive collection of ten temperate ornamental species and cultivars suited for half shady sites, fresh soil, and forest borders in gardens and parks, commonly planted in temperate regions around the world. These herbaceous perennials range from showy cultivars such as Japanese anemone 'Wild Swan' with large white single flowers, and avens 'Cooky' with brick red to bright orange flowers to the brilliant alum root 'Lime Marmalade' with acid lime green to yellow-green leaves, to commonly known species such as orchid primrose and includes barren strawberry, an interesting, yellow-flowering ground cover. This kit will add color, structure, unique detail to your half shady sites.

Laubwerk Plant Kit 21 – Temperate Ornamental Perennials

The following 10 temperate flowering ornamental species and cultivars are included in the Plant Kit21. Each species or cultivar comes in 3 variations in one seasonal aspect (in full bloom), for a total of 30 models per Kit. Note that Kit 21 is a pre-release, with currently only one season and therefore offered at a reduced price.

Carmichael's Monkshood 'Arendsii'

Aconitum carmichaelii ‘Arendsii’

A medium sized herbaceous perennial with clumps of erect stems. Palmate, deeply divided leaves of dark green color with a glossy finish. Densely packed clusters of dark blue-purple flowers from early to late fall. This commonly used garden plant was bred in 1945 by the German gardener and perennial breeder George Arends, hence the cultivar name. The profuse flowers attract bees and other insects, and make a great cut flower. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Strongly toxic in all parts.

Purple Foxglove 'Gloxiniaeflora'

Digitalis purpurea ‘Gloxiniaeflora’

An upright evergreen biennial producing only a basal rosette of light green, oblong leaves in the first year from seed. Purple, funnel-shaped flowers are borne in the second year in terminal, one-sided racemes atop leafy spires arising from rosettes of soft downy leaves. Then, blooms from late spring throughout summer. Popular choice for cottage gardens and wild, informal plantings. Well suited for shady shrub and tree areas, back of borders. Excellent for cut flower. It is considered a highly poisonous plants. In 1993, it has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Japanese Anemone 'Wild Swan'

Eriocapitella japonica ‘Wild Swan’

A clump-forming herbaceous perennial with mid-green toothed leaves divided into three lobes. Large pure white, single flowers with a purplish-blue band on the reverse and a golden yellow centre are held high above the foliage on branching stems bloom from summer to autumn. Easily divided in early spring. May need to be staked by late summer. Winner of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year Award in 2011.

Meadow Cranesbill 'Plenum Violaceum'

Geranium pratense ‘Plenum Violaceum’

An upright herbaceous perennial with dark green, snowflake-shaped leaves. A luxuriant display of double, violet-blue flowers with a pink blush in the centre blooming from early to late summer. As they flowers are sterile, they are long lasting and don't set seed. Foliage makes an attractive ground cover after bloom and provides excellent ground cover at the front of borders. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

Avens 'Cooky'

Geum coccineum ‘Cooky’

A clump-forming, compact herbaceous perennial with lobed, softly-hairy basal leaves. Foliage makes an attractive ground cover after bloom and is evergreen in warmer winter climates. The single, brick red to bright orange flowers with center clumps of yellow stamens are produced upon slender stems from late spring to summer. Attractive to bees and butterflies. Perfect for the front of borders, especially in rock gardens or wildlife gardens.

Alum Root 'Lime Marmalade'

Heuchera villosa ‘Lime Marmalade’

A vigorous, mound-forming, compact herbaceous perennial with rufffled, acid lime green to yellow-green leaves throughout the growing season. Small white flowers on green, slender, wiry stems are borne above the leaves in summer. It originated as a striking mutation from Heuchera 'Marmalade'. The US patented cultivar forms a neater, denser cushion than other lime green varieties. Excellent for shady borders or brilliant for brightening pots in shady corners.

Plantain Lily 'Francee'

Hosta × fortunei ‘Francee’

A clump-forming herbaceous perennial with broadly heart-shaped, strongly-veined mid-green leaves with narrow white margins. Funnel-shaped, pale lavender flowers in dense racemes appear in summer held on stems above the foliage mound. This cultivar is considered to be one of the best of the white-margined hostas. Foliage holds good color throughout the growing season.

Purple Loosestrife 'Robin'

Lythrum salicaria ‘Robin’

A compact growing, clump-forming herbaceous perennial with strongly upright, branching stems. Narrowly lance-shaped leaves, medium to dark green and smooth. Deep-pink to purple-pink racemes of star-shaped flowers appear typically from summer to late summer. Very attractive to bees and other insects. Suitable cut flower. The species is especially associated with boggy areas, though the cultivar tolerates drier conditions. Suitable for full sun and partial shade.

Orchid Primrose

Primula vialii

A rosette-forming herbaceous perennial with hairy, oblong-lanceolate leaves and erect, leafless stems. Stems are topped with cone-shaped spikes of densely packed, small, pale purple flowers blooming from early to mid-summer. The unopened flower buds are surrounded by bright red sepals, creating a bicolor effect. Latin specific epithet vialii honors Père Paul Vial (1855–1917), a French missionary and ethnologist who worked in Yunnan.

Barren Strawberry

Waldsteinia ternata

A compact, rhizomatous, herbaceous or semi-evergreen perennial featuring strawberry-like, trifoliate leaves arranged in rosettes. Strawberry-like, yellow flowers blooming from spring to early summer followed by inedible berries. Spreads by stolons and rhizomes to form a thick carpet of foliage. Interesting ground cover and effective as an edger. Genus name honors Count Franz Adam von Waldstein-Wartenberg (1759-1823), Austrian botanist and writer.
