A medium sized herbaceous perennial with clumps of erect stems. Palmate, deeply divided leaves of dark green color with a glossy finish. Densely packed clusters of dark blue-purple flowers from early to late fall. This commonly used garden plant was bred in 1945 by the German gardener and perennial breeder George Arends, hence the cultivar name. The profuse flowers attract bees and other insects, and make a great cut flower. It has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. Strongly toxic in all parts.

The US patented cultivar forms a neater, denser cushion than other lime green varieties. Excellent for shady borders or brilliant for brightening pots in shady corners.
